Dayton musician and all around decent fella, Steve Makofka joined Dr. J in the studio to talk about his latest project a very cool “K-Indie” album called ‘Bring The Kids!’ The album is available on all of the online retailers and from Steve’s website, stevemakofka.com. You can listen to the new record on Spotify! or Music Releases or get the album on CDBaby or Amazon! Steve was a great guest who shared his experience making the record produced by himself, Patrick Himes and Todd the Fox at Reel Love Studios in Dayton, Ohio. Several Dayton area musicians most notably Todd the Fox, Victoria Harper and Alan Frasier – who often perform as the Todd the Fox trio!

Recently we have been wondering what makes for a great music experience? What makes a venue a great place to see a band? Is it the ‘feel’ of a place? Is it the camaraderie of the staff, fellow music lovers, musicians? Or is a great place a matter of the sound in a space? Does great sound equal great experience? Maybe it is the fact of seeing your favorite performer(s) or hearing a song that you adore that makes a place special?
What do you think? Is it one of those reasons or is it something more about the culture of a location, street, neighborhood that makes for a powerful experience at a show?
This Tuesday we have a real treat for all of you music lovers! Tod Weidner (Shrug, Motel Beds) will be on the show playing some live music during the second hour of YTAA. While Tod has been a guest on the show before we have not had the pleasure of having him play some songs for us from the performance studio. The new Shrug album ‘Age of Ashes’ is a brilliant record and we are very excited about having Tod in the performance studio to play and talk about his music and upcoming shows with us.
If that was not enough musical goodness… around 6pm we are going to have Charlie Jackson in the performance space to play and chat. We have been playing some of his songs for a while and they are terrific! If you are not up on Charlie’s great songs… well, that one’s on you because we have been playing them on YTAA.
So, you have no excuses! None. Zip on the rationalizations. Join us tomorrow for an expanded edition of Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative from 3-8pm for some terrific new music and live performances from Tod Weidner and Charlie Jackson. That happy feeling that you have right now is because you are excited about this show. See you tomorrow beginning at 3pm on wudr.udayton.edu or 99.5 and 98.1fm in Dayton!
We learned a few weeks ago that Dave and Vivienne of Babbling April will be leaving the Gem City for new jobs in Washington DC at the end of March. And while we informed them that this has to be some kind of mistake. They assure us that they have to take this opportunity. So, Dayton got together last night it was time for one last hurrah for Babbling April as-we-know-them, featuring some of Dayton’s finest bands.
The farewell party was held in the Fire Blocks District of downtown Dayton where we all hope to develop a DIY space for bands to play as well as other cultural events in the city –spoken word performance, alternative lectures, rallies and more. There was no cover charge, but donations were accepted to raise money for the bands that so graciously gave up their time to play for all of us!
Babbling April will return. But until then here is a clip of Babbling April doing a Pixies cover! So fun!
One of the amazing benefits of living in The Gem City – Dayton, Ohio is the opportunity to see so many terrific bands that simply blow you away and demonstrate the power of music! One of those moments happened last week with Pure Acoustic at The Old Yellow Cab/Tavern!
This weekend we saw Salvadore Ross, Frontier Folk Nebraska and Human Cannonball at Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District of Dayton, Ohio. And while all bands were fantastic, Frontier Folk Nebraska — from just down the road in Covington, KY — were powerful. It was a great night of great songs, amazing guitar players, bouncing bass lines and some fine drumming from all three bands! Remember in the words of Mrs. Dr. J: “support your local music scene!” — its a lifestyle and a mantra of great music!
We have seen FFN several times in the past but last night the band demonstrated the reason that they are so damn good: great singing, tight and expressive harmonies, solid drumming, a bass line that just did not quit and, of course, fantastic guitar work! We look forward to the band’s upcoming live record that was recorded at the Southgate house in Cincinnati and will be available within days! You need this record. You should go pre-order the record right now! We did. You will love this band and their fantastic songs! Do not miss a chance to see them when they are out! Trust us this band delivers the goods!
This week we are joined by one of the exciting new bands in the Miami Valley! Manray will be joining us in the studio to discuss their latest record — a terrific EP called ‘Feeling Alright’ and their upcoming shows in Dayton, Cincinnati and further a field! We could not be more excited to have them on the show. The band has agreed to chat and play live in the WUDR performance studio. Check out their upcoming show with The Zygotes and SKRT at The Old Yellow Cab Building!
This Saturday music lovers will have a real treat with a Pure Acoustic show at The Old Yellow Cab building. Not only is Yellow Cab one of many great venues in our fine city, it is also involved in some of the most innovative programs for music lovers! Some of Dayton’s finest musicians will perform only acoustic — just like the poster says there will be no microphones — imagine just hearing the voices as they come from the singer! No amplification, just real sounds from real musicians to a real audience. Nothing added. Just good music. This idea has been kicked around for a while by Jeff and the folks at Yellow Cab, kudos to them for making this happen. Go see some of our favorite local musicians for a rare musical experience. Expect some exciting combinations and there could be a surprise or two for you and your ears!

The pictures below represent a few things that we are very grateful for in 2015!
Terrific friends and musicians who came to the studio like Tom Gilliam (Ghost Town Silence) and Dave New and Vivienne Machi (of Babbling April) who were amazing for our annual holiday program (pictured below). A mighty feeling of appreciation to all of the folks that joined us this year in the studio. Many many thanks to Charles Hartman, David Payne, Larry Evans, and Joe Anderl, Eli Alban and Justin Satinover of The 1984 Draft. We cannot adequately express our appreciation to everyone who has called in or came to the station and allowed us to interview them this year. You rock.
And as always, the opportunity that we have to do this program is a debt that we can never repay. However, we will always try to pay that back. Thank you all for your support as we enter into our 12th year of doing this radio show on WUDR in Dayton, Ohio!
The New Old-FashionedThe time Dave Zupp stopped by!
Don Thrasher ready!
Thank you all! Have a happy and musical New Year’s Eve! Go see some independent music! We will catch you this Tuesday at 3pm on WUDR for our second Best of 2015 show with our friend Tom Gilliam!
Hi there! Remember us? Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative has been on the air all Summer and now we are approaching the Fall. Some of us are excited about new music and colder temperatures and some of us are just excited about new music.
There are several great shows to talk about happening in Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati in the next few weeks including Dayton Music Fest which promises to be smashing this year! There is MidPoint Music Festival happening in Cincinnati in a few weeks with so many great indie bands — everything from The Afghan Whigs to Wussy to Real Estate and more! Then there are some celebrations of milestones in music with HEXADIODE and Curse of Cassandra joining a 15 year celebration of My Latex Brain this weekend! And the 20th anniversary of Dayton’s own Shrug which will leave everyone happy regardless of the weather outside! And then there is our new favorite band Left & Right in Columbus on Wednesday! Then back in Dayton we have Cherry Lee and the Hot Rod Hounds and oh so much more to talk about! Do not forget the Telephone Party at The “Old” Yellow Cab building this weekend and Sidestravaganza at South Park Tavern on Saturday in the Gem City! This is not the end of the list folks, at best we have just scratched the surface on a few of the shows that we will discuss on the ol’ YTAA show from 3-6pm (e) tomorrow on the radio dial or ‘puter stream!
We will also examine the year 1989 in Mrs. Dr. J’s year block! And hey did you know that Chuck Klosterman is visiting our area in a week? We know!
Join Mrs. Dr. J and Dr. J for another show of music you just will not hear anywhere else! We promise it will be fun. Or something.
