Agree with our pals at A&theA!  This is a phenomenal record!  Just when you think that Dayton’s music scene is one category or is easily pigeonholed, comes a band like Lioness which is a hard 180 degree shift in music approach, tone, and songwriting.  Lioness creates an amazing atmosphere that draws the listener into the songs.

The Queen is Dead Deluxe

140508-smiths-rider-640x426The Smiths have not traded on their past output the way that is often expected of bands post-breakup.  In fact, The Smiths do not have an history of re-releasing their past catalog or demos and remixes or for that matter much officially released live material. Of course, Morrissey has released some terrific live records (such as the great 2004 recording, released almost three months later – ‘Live at Earl’s Court’) and he has made available different interpretations of songs from his solo career in collections of B-sides and such.  Since The Smiths broke up in 1987, there have been discussions with some regularity that the band has unreleased gems, live recordings, demos, different takes and interpretations of songs that simply have not seen the light of day.  And whether or not the scuttlebutt is accurate, the discussion persist nonetheless.

On October 20th of this year, The Smiths will put some of those rumors and debates to the test with the first deluxe release of their significant record, ‘The Queen is Dead’.  This album is widely considered to be both The Smiths’ finest work and for their fans it is seen simply as one of the greatest albums ever made by a rock band.  ‘The Queen Is Dead’ has cast a significant influence over subsequent generations of musicians and music fans since it was first released in the summer of 1986.  Do you remember where you were when this record was released?  Do you remember the first time that you heard it?  This reissue represents the first time that The Smiths have made their back catalog available in such a way where fans can revisit the songs and see demos and different takes that allow for an understanding of how the songs were completed in the way that were on the original release.  This peek behind the musical curtain is what makes re-releases like this important.

In addition to the 2017 remastered original album, the collection will feature demos and early interpretations of most of the tracks on the record, as well as a selection of newly mastered B-sides such as “Unloveable”, “Money Changes Everything”, and “Asleep”. These interpretations and alternative versions demonstrate the reason that so many music fans adored this band.  Many of the early recordings are previously unreleased, though the “The Boy with the Thorn in His Side” demo was made previously available on a Record Store Day exclusive 7-inch with a B-side, “Rubber Ring”.  The only recent release of remastered material from the band before now.

The Smiths - the queen is deadThis repackaging of ‘The Queen is Dead’ will be available in several different formats for music fans — CDs, records, and a DVD.  The release will be available as a double-CD, a deluxe boxed set with three CDs and a DVD, and a five-LP box. While all versions will include the newly remastered album and the additional recordings in quality 96kHz/24-bit PCM stereo, the DVD and LP sets will also include a never before heard live album called ‘Live in Boston’ recorded at the Great Woods Center For The Performing Arts on August 5, 1986 where the band performed 13 songs and a DVD featuring the 2017 master of the album and, if that was not enough, ‘The Queen Is Dead – A Film By Derek Jarman.

“You cannot continue to record and simply hope that your audience will approve, or that average critics will approve, or that radio will approve. You progress only when you wonder if an abnormally scientific genius would approve – and this is the leap The Smiths took with The Queen Is Dead.” – MORRISSEY

“The Queen Is Dead was epic to make and epic to live.” – JOHNNY MARR

So, start saving up now.  You are going to want this.  Or you can preorder.

A peek at Dr. J’s record collection
We wanted to share the kind podcast of Dr. J that Izzy from The Gem City Podcast did with him a few weeks ago!  We spoke about interests in music, independent music, and the fantastic music coming out of Dayton, Ohio now and in the past. Izzy was a scholar and a gentleman who demonstrated the reason that the Gem City Podcast is one of the best music podcasts being made today in the Miami Valley!  Whether you are a fan of music or just someone who is interested in how a college professor becomes fascinated by independent and alternative music, this podcast has something for everyone.  If you believe that a day without music like a day without air… Oh, yeah we may have overstated that a little bit but seriously if you believe that some of greatest musical discoveries are in your future and not in your past then this podcast is for you!  And you should check into their other podcasts while you are there!  They have some interviews and conversations with some of our favorite Dayton musicians, music enthusiasts, and others involved in the area music scene.

Thank you Izzy and the folks at The Gem City Podcast for taking the time to talk about music with us!  You are terrific!

The I Don’t Cares

As many of you already know, Paul Westerberg is back with a new project with Juliana Hatfield of The Blake Babies called The I Don’t Cares. The album, Wild Stab, is a classic slice of Westerberg with a strong sense of melody as strengthened by Juliana Hatfield.  She always had a way with a melody.  And while Westerberg is one of the finest indie musicians, period.  His solo work has ranged all over the map.  So, it is nice to see him return to that Stonesy influenced post punk/indie that we all so deeply love.  And a great example of that is the reworking of a past Westerberg solo tune… Born for Me.

Yeah, life is good.  New music from Paul Westerberg and Juliana Hatfield, a new Bob Mould record on the way; it’s an ok day.  What new music are you excited about?  Let us know at drjwudr over there on Twitter and Gmail.

Welcome 2016 – A Year of Music Discovery!

Studio

Another year has passed and a new year is still young.  All too often there are commentators who pontificate about “how no new great music is being made today.”  Normally, these “authorities” bemoan the lack of musical experimentation and excitement.  They either point to the state of the Top 40 and the debacle(s) that was/were the New Years Eve shows on the broadcast networks or they extol the virtues of past “classics” that the music on the charts cannot possibly ever come close to appreciating.

These music critics and commentators complain about how utterly underwhelmed they are by the music on the radio, music on the satellite channels, and the music that is widely available via nearly endless repetition  to the point of illness.  And, of course, these critics are entitled to their opinions.  But we believe to focus on some nostalgia overlooks the opportunities for invention and discovery.  To that perspective we answer that quite simply you are looking in the wrong place for exciting new music.  And yes, the music industry is over-focused on the idea of big selling “hits.”  An excellent analysis of this “machine” can be found in Seabrook’s excellent book The Song Machine.

Every year for the past 12 years we have found amazing music from the margins, the outskirts, the unsigned, the overlooked, the local, the regional, the self-distributed, the incredible music being made in cities outside the orbit of the record labels and opinion makers with thousands of followers on any name your poison social network. We invite you to join us this year for a year in music discovery — and not just on Tuesdays when we create Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative — but throughout the week and throughout the year!  It is surprisingly simple, just go to your local music stores and browse the local, regional, self-produced section of your record stores and music outlets.  Skip past the major label stuff — do not worry, you will be exposed to that over and over regardless of your enthusiasm for that music.  However, there is new music, interesting music, exciting music being made in every genre in locations near and far.

In addition, to seeking out new sounds and new bands in the record stores, you can also take chances on local bands wherever you might call home. There are literally thousands of interesting bands playing any night of the week in any place.  Go out.  Listen to some new stuff.  Buy some merchandise.  As we used to say every T-Shirt sold represents gas in the tank or a hot meal.  Support folks who wear their musicianship in the lines of every song that they write, every note that they play, and every idea that they share.  Go out and support those musicians.

And when you find something that interests and excites you, reach out to us at Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative and let us know!  You can reach us here or at drjwudr on twitter and gmail.  We welcome new suggestions, interesting performances, and new discoveries for both our radio program and for the sheer joy of listening to new music.

The future music is out there.  And its great.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin

One of our favorite records of 2015 was The High Country by Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin.

This Springfield, Missouri indie band has been making some of the smartest indie pop since the early 2000’s. The High Country marks their return after two years. And while the lineup has changed a bit with the departure of one of the band’s principal songwriters, John Robert Cardwell, Phil Dickey capably took over all main vocals and wrote some catchy indie powerpopish shoe gaze.

Take a peek/listen at one of the reasons that we loved this record!

Lyrics for “New Coats”

New coats waiting on the snow to fall
You soak up what little bit of this gift you can and roll your sleeves up

And sorry piano players hunt and punch their songs along a working instrument
The loose tooth grin shines back at them
And I’ve never heard the song
But I’m pretty sure I know how it ends

I was waiting on a warmer winter

Who did what?

Zac Little: vocals, autoharp, dulcimer, sitar, bass, synth, bowed bouzouki, guitar
Leticia Wiggins: flute
