New Show, featuring The Turnback

Turnback bandYou know the drill.  Its Tuesday.  Time for another Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative on WUDR from 3-6pm!

Today on YTAA we are featuring the indie power pop of The Turnback!  Their new record, Are We There Yet? has the perfect combination of solid rock melody, deft harmonies, and well written lyrics backed up with a solid guitar, bass, and drums attack!  Goldmine has a terrific review that we could not agree with more!

All too often music curmudgeons lament the end of rock and roll – there is nothing to get excited about anymore.  Do these folks have ears? With bands like, The Turnback, we say that rock and roll is alive and well. We love the sound of ‘Five Days a Week’,’July’, and ‘A Place for Me’.  And the addition of The Beatles cover ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ that moves past the psychedelia of the original and pulls out the core of that song with a Smithereens-garage rock sound that was deeply hidden in that classic track – we say that rock and roll is not just safe but full of energy!

Join us this Tuesday as we talk with members of The Turnback about their latest and most impressive album to date!

Welcome 2016 – A Year of Music Discovery!

Studio

Another year has passed and a new year is still young.  All too often there are commentators who pontificate about “how no new great music is being made today.”  Normally, these “authorities” bemoan the lack of musical experimentation and excitement.  They either point to the state of the Top 40 and the debacle(s) that was/were the New Years Eve shows on the broadcast networks or they extol the virtues of past “classics” that the music on the charts cannot possibly ever come close to appreciating.

These music critics and commentators complain about how utterly underwhelmed they are by the music on the radio, music on the satellite channels, and the music that is widely available via nearly endless repetition  to the point of illness.  And, of course, these critics are entitled to their opinions.  But we believe to focus on some nostalgia overlooks the opportunities for invention and discovery.  To that perspective we answer that quite simply you are looking in the wrong place for exciting new music.  And yes, the music industry is over-focused on the idea of big selling “hits.”  An excellent analysis of this “machine” can be found in Seabrook’s excellent book The Song Machine.

Every year for the past 12 years we have found amazing music from the margins, the outskirts, the unsigned, the overlooked, the local, the regional, the self-distributed, the incredible music being made in cities outside the orbit of the record labels and opinion makers with thousands of followers on any name your poison social network. We invite you to join us this year for a year in music discovery — and not just on Tuesdays when we create Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative — but throughout the week and throughout the year!  It is surprisingly simple, just go to your local music stores and browse the local, regional, self-produced section of your record stores and music outlets.  Skip past the major label stuff — do not worry, you will be exposed to that over and over regardless of your enthusiasm for that music.  However, there is new music, interesting music, exciting music being made in every genre in locations near and far.

In addition, to seeking out new sounds and new bands in the record stores, you can also take chances on local bands wherever you might call home. There are literally thousands of interesting bands playing any night of the week in any place.  Go out.  Listen to some new stuff.  Buy some merchandise.  As we used to say every T-Shirt sold represents gas in the tank or a hot meal.  Support folks who wear their musicianship in the lines of every song that they write, every note that they play, and every idea that they share.  Go out and support those musicians.

And when you find something that interests and excites you, reach out to us at Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative and let us know!  You can reach us here or at drjwudr on twitter and gmail.  We welcome new suggestions, interesting performances, and new discoveries for both our radio program and for the sheer joy of listening to new music.

The future music is out there.  And its great.

Excited for a show filled with new music!

Such an amazing time for new music in the Gem City that we can barely contain ourselves – it all feels like an incredible dream!

We simply could not be more excited about the show tomorrow… premiers from so many great bands that we keep pinching ourselves because we just have to be dreaming, right?

We will be playing a great new songs from Dayton’s own Moira – ‘Midwestern Waste’ off of the Asleep/Repeat/Awake EP which you can download tomorrow night after our show because they are giving it away as a free download on their Bandcamp page moirabandofficial.bandcamp.com!  If you have not seen one of their recent concert – trust us, you want this song and you want it badly!  Oh yeah.

GOLDcover2One of our favorite Dayon bands Me & Mountains have new stuff for all of us.  ‘Gold’ is from their yet untitled upcoming fourth record recorded with Micah Carli at Popside Recording Studios.  The band is several songs into their recording with Carli and based on this track alone – the future looks good for Me & Mountains and your ears!

GLYWe are also fortunate to have a track from Good Luck Year‘s Tinder for the Fire EP with ‘Temporary’ which they will release during their set at Dayton’s Music Art and Film Fest!

Low downAnd not to mention the guys in The New Old-Fashioned have their sophomore record, Low Down Dirty Summer Nights headed our way on September 26th!  You can go see these Midwestern barn burners at Gilly’s in Dayton, Ohio on the 26th and pick up a copy of this fine record! The band has captured the intensity of their live sound without sacrificing the harmonies and soul that make them a band not to be missed!

That is enough reason to listen right there music lovers!  Solid music craft is alive and well!

We will also discuss the upcoming Dayton Music Art and Film Festival slated for September 18th and 19th as well as playing new music from many diverse and exciting bands such as The Bottle Rockets, Line & Circle, COLD BEAT, Sink Tapes, Wilco, La Luz, The Wheel Workers, Bad Bad Hats, Sea Of Bees,Grenades!?, McGuff and the Dumpster Fires, The Apache Relay, and The Fratellis to name a few of the bands with new tunes that we will spin for your listening pleasure!

Of course, what is a Tuesday without some cool interpretations of past music?  We have an amazing cover from Robyn Hitchcock and a surprisingly atmospheric lo-fi 80s cover from Tashaki Miyaki!  Where else would you get all of this indie musical goodness?

Join Dr. J from 3-6pm on wudr.udayton.edu!  Remember you can always call in requests to 937-229-2774 too!  See ya!

This week we celebrate the New Split EP from The New Old-Fashioned and The Repeating Arms

Hilltops & Highways cover.jpgThis week we are beyond excited about new music from two of our favorite Dayton, Ohio bands – The New Old-Fashioned who are already finishing up their sophomore full length hot off the heels of The Ladies 7″ record and The Repeating Arms who always are incredible in all that they do!

The two bands are not only “splitting” a six-song EP ‘Hilltops and Highways’ but in the truest sense of collaboration these two bands recorded and worked directly with each other on the songs.  No where does this shine more brightly than on the tracks that open and close this EP.  County Jail Hymnal showcases the vocal abilities of the singers of both bands. This lonesome (dare we say Hank Williams-eque) plaintive aching song demonstrates what is captivating about both of these bands: quality song-craft!  And the combination of both bands on ‘Some Nights” is a powerful gestalt of the vocals, guitars, steel, drums, and more.  Rarely has a song taken on such real authentic urgency.  And the ending of that tune has to be experienced.  Heartbreak and sadness are simply palatable in the songs on this EP; throughout it you have fine musicianship, excellent chemistry and all around exemplary effort among the musicians.

The fact that they have collaborated on-stage so much is well demonstrated in the work on these songs.  ‘My Heart Still Loves You’ has Kent Montgomery of The New Old-Fashioned sounding like a countrified version of Matthew Sweet. We bet that Sweet wishes he could sound like that! While ‘Radio Waves’ – a real song about the devastating loss of a radio station to water damaged is powerfully evoked by David Payne.  When he sings about ‘the signal getting weaker…” you feel the sense of losing a musical friend.  And ‘Honey’ demonstrates why The Repeating Arms should be household names.  Forget what you hear on country, folk, and alt-country radio – this is “the Real McCoy.”  When Harold Hensley pleads with Honey not to go out tonight…” the hair on the back of your neck stand up.  These musicians capture something that cannot be bottled and sold from a shelf.

TNOF-RArmsYou can see these bands play these songs on June 27th in Dayton at Gilly’s Jazz!

So join us this week from 3-6pm (eastern) as we play the songs on this incredible EP on WUDR – where we live our motto “Support Your Local Music Scene!”  Final_jacket.pdf

Of course, you can also count on a wide variety of terrific indie, folk, country, and more on the program tomorrow.  We have tons of new music from so many… hang on to your hats:  Waxahatchee, Lucero, Ryan Adams, The Mowgli’s, Vaadat Charigim, Thee Oh Sees, Mac McCaughan, Timeshares, BRONCHO, Great Lake Swimmers, Alvvays, Bully, The Mountain Goats, Built to Spill, Smug Brothers, Mittenfields, Charming Disaster, Gringo Star, and more!

You can also expect some classic indie with Guided By Voices, The Afghan Whigs, and Teenage Fanclub!

Fifteen Days and Counting…

SmugBrothers_WoodpeckerParadise_Cover_PHOTOCREDIT_rawersDayton’s own SMUG BROTHERS “WOODPECKER PARADISE” is coming out in fifteen days on 2.24.14 on the indie GAS DADDY GO! RECORDS

And this release will be out on CD and Digital download which is a new form for GDG!  And we could not be more excited. Really. Its exciting for all lovers of great indie music!

From the Press Release: “Following the one two punch of the 2014 releases “Strictly Triggers” [EP] and “On the Way to the Punchline,” Smug Brothers spent the summer and fall recording to 4track in guitarist Kyle Melton’s home studio and touring out in support of their recent releases, reaching out to new audiences in Philadelphia, Louisville, Indianapolis, Morgantown, WV, and Fort Wayne, IN.

A chance conversation with ex-Smug Brother, current Motel Beds guitarist, and Dayton engineer extraordinaire Darryl Robbins led toward the fruition of “Woodpecker Paradise.” After submitting a batch of 35 demos to Robbins for consideration, nine were hand-selected and the Smug Bros set to work as a quartet, recording the album live in just two sessions.

In the course of the band’s 10 year history, this is the first time an entire album was recorded live by all its members. The results are fresh and impulsive, urgent and commanding. While the record’s sound is singular and consistent, the material remains eclectic, as has been the trademark of the Smugs since the beginning. From the restrained yet anthemic indie rock of lead track “Meet A Changing World” to the esoteric “One Question Too Many” to the fragmented 60s pop of “Venus Out at Night,” Smug Brothers run through a myriad of sounds over the course of “Woodpecker Paradise” while retaining their singular voice throughout.”

You can find the Smug Brothers on all the social media!

So, you may want to keep eyes peeled for more information on this fine band!  You can sleep easy knowing that the Dr. J’s will be all over this so you will not miss a thing!

It is a Two for Tuesday on Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative
