We just had to share a recent discovery that we have made… The Decade Runners is a band that you must check out! You need to hear their amazing song, The Ride… and once you do — you will simply be unable to live without it. How often does that really happen in music anymore? We do not mean some corporate piece of music that you are told to love because executives are counting on sales of units. No, we mean a song that once you hear it… the music hits you stronger than a slap upside the head. You hear the guitars, the bouncy bass line, and a steady drum cadence that leaves you no choice. No choice whatsoever. You get up, you dance, you smile and you just close your eyes and find yourself transported by the music. A great song can do that. A great song should do that!

The Decade Runners are a guitar-focused rock band with a perfect, captivating sound that seems all the more impossible when you find out how crushingly young the band members are for playing such complex melodies. They sound like a band that is much older — and we mean that in a good way, alright! — than simply measured in years. As stated in their bio, The Decade Runners “came about as a result of three of the members being in the same class at school.” And in true, Tom Hanksian – That Thing You Do fashion, the band wins a competition and they understand that they have some special on their hands. And we believe that after you hear The Ride, you will believe that too.

This week we will be listening to some of the great local music that we have in the city of Dayton! Many of the great music, venues, and artwork in our community will be previewed for those who are thinking about attending DMF 2012! And honestly that should be you. We also have some rare demos and live recordings from some of the artists who are making the Gem City music festival so amazing. Co-organizer Don Thrasher will be joining us in the first hour of the show. Expect some great music from Southeast Engine, Vanity Theft, Roley Yuma, Sleep Fleet, Al Holbrook, Turkish Delights, Me & Mountains, Motel Beds, Captain of Industry, Amnesia, Tim Pritchard and The Boxcar Suite and much much more!

We will also talk about the bands and artists that we saw at Midpoint Music Fest this past weekend. For the record, Dayton’s own Motel Beds were amazing at MPMF this year!

Incredible Finds at MPMF

Mrs. Dr. J and I saw many incredible bands at the Midpoint Music Festival! Some of the standouts included Swear and Shake, The Ready Stance, Emily and the Complexes, Goldenboy, Shark?, Hospitality, The Purrs, Goldenboy and many more! We will be writing longer reviews soon! What were some of your favorite bands and musical moments of MPMF? Was it when Frankie Rose did a great Cure cover — ‘The Forest’? There were so many great bands in such a short time that all of us indie music fans felt very fortunate indeed. Thank you MPMF. Look forward to next year!

The band has passed the $1,000 point and are very close to the goal of $1,700! Keep the support coming oh kind and generous music folks!

Normally when you think of what night you should go out, you think about the weekend… maybe a Friday or Saturday night, right? Well music fans, this week Thursday is for Indie! That’s right, this Thursday, January 19th, we have a terrific collection of Dayton bands who will be playing at the Rathskeller Room at Wright State University! This is a show that you should not miss! We have a great lineup that includes Vanity Theft — whose album Get What You Came For — made my best of 2011 list. In addition to VT we have: We Were Animals — and their Apoco-Lips album– should not be missed, Abertooth Lincoln, and 3rd and Main! The show starts at 7pm and goes until 10pm that leaves plenty of time for your weekend. It is an all ages show so that music fans of all ages can begin their love affair with Dayton music! And most importantly you can get a good jump on a weekend of great local music.

Kickstart Me & Mountains’ Feral

Dayton’s own Me & Mountains are not only a great live band that is part of an exploding local music scene but they are also rather savvy business guys. Normally the path to releasing music is wrought with many logistical challenges, delays, and processing problems. And while we are not talking the length of time that it took one William Bruce Bailey to release a record they titled ‘Chinese Democracy’, it can be a daunting task for bands to get music out to fans quickly and easily.

Thankfully, there are newer and more direct models that musicians with some acumen — and social media skills — can use to do that one most sacred of tasks in all of musicdom: getting the music to the people! But of course, we can talk about a band or artist playing live that is one way to share music, and for me, that remains a critical part of the experience. So, while playing out continues to be as important today as it ever has been, we all want to continue to encourage groups like Me & Mountains, Motel Beds, The Rebel Set, Smug Brothers, Oh Condor, and so many other area musicians to play in the Gem City more often! Yet it is still important to those who have heard the music to share it with others! And we need CDs, tapes, record albums, and MP3s in order to share the sweet nectar of musical satisfaction.

So, the gentlemen behind Me & Mountains are among those bands trailblazing new forms of fan-supported musical releases. And in the end, it is not dependent upon some distant and disconnected record label execs wondering whether a band or song is “the right sound”, it is the initiative of the bands themselves with the support of music lovers that should lead the way for new releases. And this model can lead to some great music ringing in the ears of fans sooner rather than later. Add to this the successful examples of several local groups, such as The Motel Beds and Smug Brothers using different forms of distribution and you have a recipe for musical happiness all around.

So, what can you do? You, dear music fan, can visit the KickStarter page for Me & Mountains and support their effort to release their new album, Feral on vinyl. You can for an incredibly small effort, support great local music and stick it to the corporate model.
