One Reason

Motel Beds - Tango Boys Cover
The energetic 'Beds captured on the Tango Boys cover

One reason that Dayton has a thriving music scene is illustrated in the fact that in one weekend we have the vinyl release of Tango Boys by The Motel Beds at The Canal Street Tavern this past Friday.  The ‘Beds played a blistering set with the Buffalo Killers and Chocolate Horse.  And in the same night you have Vanity Theft, Okay Lindon, and Good Sir Con Artist playing Blind Bob’s.  If that was not enough, you then have Bonneville releasing their new CD, Amy’s House with a show again at Canal Street on Saturday.  What we have here is an embarrassment of musical riches. Dayton has a vibrant music scene indeed! And we have not even begun to talk about The Rebel Set, Guided By Voices and Me & Mountains who are both working on new music for your listening pleasure in 2012!

Busy Friday for Dayton Music Fans!

Vanity Theft's DYT Ugly Sweater/Homecoming Show

This Friday we have shows by Okay Lindon, Good Sir Con Artist, and YTAA faves – Vanity Theft at Blind Bob’s!  Show starts at 9pm!  Then just a mile or two away at The Canal Street Tavern there is another great show from The Buffalo Killers, The Motel Beds, and Chocolate Horse!  That show also starts at 9pm!  What can Mrs. Dr. J and I tell you?  Clearly scientists need to discover cloning technology or maybe the simpler time travel device?

Bonneville CD Release Show

CD RELEASE SHOW - Dayton , OH
Bonneville CD Release show!

Columbus-Dayton music guys, Bonneville, are releasing their brand new CD, Amy’s House, this  Saturday with a big ol’ musicalpaloosa spectacular at The Canal Street Tavern!  We have been playing Go Getter for about a month on Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative — but there are several great tracks to enjoy off of this new CD!  We highly recommend that you get yourself a copy of this album.  The title track refers to the owner of the house where the record was recorded over four weekends.

You will enjoy the trademark tight harmonies of this young but polished local band!

They are touring right now — after this show they are playing in the Northeast — so check this blog for more information!  Of course, Bonneville also has a fine Facebook page that you might seek out for info!

And, if you do not have a cool Bonneville T-shirt, you can pick up at the show!

Friend of the Show

Tom Gilliam of Dayton’s own The Rebel Set (check out their twitter feed @TheRebelSet and Facebook page) will be joining the show in a few weeks to play some acoustic music live in the studio… You should be excited.

Very excited.

More details to follow!

Life After Liftoff gets some Lovelines Love

LAL
Life After Liftoff - Memories of You

Yeah, we know the title is a bit cheesy but this news is not!  Dayton band Life After Liftoff is the featured Eargasm of the Loveline with Mike and Dr. Drew program.  Any support for great Dayton music is much appreciated.  And if you have not heard Life After Liftoff, you should check into Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative next week from 4-6pm on WUDR.  We have seen them play several times in Dayton and they are a great live band that you should not miss!  Remember that we have you musical back here at Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative.  Your pals, Dr. J and Mrs. Dr. J

Thanks to Baron Von Porkchop’s Terrifying Tales of the Macabre for Stopping by the WUDR Studio

The Baron in the Studio

Many thanks and salutations go to Baron Von Porkchop for visiting Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative to chat about the Terrifying Tales of the Macabre!  It was a great interview and for someone from the 19th century, The Baron has a very modern sense of humor!  We will share information about the horror tour and the terrific Terrifying Tales program with you all soon!

Who Should be in the ‘Hall

Well here we go again.

Another year where we here at Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative challenge the music industry to include artists that deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that consistently go ignored.  Several artists have not received a single nomination — The Replacements, Richard Thompson (with or without Fairport Convention), Depeche Mode, Billy Bragg, KISS, Rush, and The Pogues to name but a select few!

Yeah we have the Cure among the nominees, but we would bet you a good indie rock CD that they do not get into the Hall.

In short, any Hall that does not have The Replacements is not worthy to call itself a Rock and Roll anything!

Your opinionated musical pal, -Dr. J

What are you listening to…?

CDs
This is a picture of some CDs.

It is time for that eternal question that has plagued humanity since we started to clap two rocks together… What are you listening to that has not been played to death?  What new music has captured your fancy and you simply cannot live without?  What ear candy have you tried and now, can’t stop… OK, you get the point.  Send us your musical recommendations!  Please.  Pretty please with sugar on it!

R.E.M. to “Call it a Day”

We here at Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative are dealing with the consequences of R.E.M.’s announcement that they are  breaking up.  According to the band itself:

“To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.”

We did enjoy listening.  Thank you R.E.M.

Welcome to the YTAA Site

Imagine you are standing in front of the music board for the radio station.
Independent music for everyone!

This site is the new website from the former School of Rock with Dr. J and Mrs. Dr. J website.

We decided to change the name of the show, blog, and all sundry connected items to reflect the new focus of the program that we have been doing since November of 2005 on WUDR!  This site will focus on the program, music that we love, and our undying effort to encourage listeners/readers to check out independent music that would normally go unnoticed.

You can send suggestions about great music that should be shared with us at drjwudr at twitter.com or drjwudr at gmail.com.

Keep the Faith! – Dr. J and Mrs. Dr. J
