Amazing early R.E.M. Live Video!

We do not hide from our love of classic alternative on Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative.

And today Mrs. Dr. J found what can only be described as a classic set!  Recorded by Benjamin R. Clark!  What a discovery!

R.E.M. – 10 October 1982, Live from the Raleigh Underground (Partial Show) on YouTube

Last night we saw Frontier Folk Nebraska

1One of the amazing benefits of living in The Gem City – Dayton, Ohio is the opportunity to see so many terrific bands that simply blow you away and demonstrate the power of music!  One of those moments happened last week with Pure Acoustic at The Old Yellow Cab/Tavern!

This weekend we saw Salvadore Ross, Frontier Folk Nebraska and Human Cannonball at Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District of Dayton, Ohio.  And while all bands were fantastic, Frontier Folk Nebraska — from just down the road in Covington, KY — were powerful.  It was a great night of great songs, amazing guitar players, bouncing bass lines and some fine drumming from all three bands!   Remember in the words of Mrs. Dr. J:  “support your local music scene!” — its a lifestyle and a mantra of great music!

5We have seen FFN several times in the past but last night the band demonstrated the reason that they are so damn good: great singing, tight and expressive harmonies, solid drumming, a bass line that just did not quit and, of course, fantastic guitar work!  We look forward to the band’s upcoming live record that was recorded at the Southgate house in Cincinnati and will be available within days!  You need this record.  You should go pre-order the record right now!  We did.  You will love this band and their fantastic songs!  Do not miss a chance to see them when they are out!  Trust us this band delivers the goods!

Pure Acoustic

This Saturday music lovers will have a real treat with a Pure Acoustic show at The Old Yellow Cab building.  Not only is Yellow Cab one of many great venues in our fine city, it is also involved in some of the most innovative programs for music lovers!  Some of Dayton’s finest musicians will perform only acoustic — just like the poster says there will be no microphones — imagine just hearing the voices as they come from the singer!  No amplification, just real sounds from real musicians to a real audience.  Nothing added.  Just good music.  This idea has been kicked around for a while by Jeff and the folks at Yellow Cab, kudos to them for making this happen.  Go see some of our favorite local musicians for a rare musical experience.  Expect some exciting combinations and there could be a surprise or two for you and your ears!

  • Old Yellow Cab Building
  • February 6 – 8pm $5 – want a low cost for something so cool!

We will see you all there!

Picture Time… Remember when Rossonian performed?

We wanted to share some pictures of one of the first bands who came into the studio and played for us!  That night they played Blind Bob’s in Dayton and were just incredible!

Gem City Podcast featuring our own Dr. J

Boston's First record and American Werewolf Academy's latest single
A peek at Dr. J’s record collection
We wanted to share the kind podcast of Dr. J that Izzy from The Gem City Podcast did with him a few weeks ago!  We spoke about interests in music, independent music, and the fantastic music coming out of Dayton, Ohio now and in the past. Izzy was a scholar and a gentleman who demonstrated the reason that the Gem City Podcast is one of the best music podcasts being made today in the Miami Valley!  Whether you are a fan of music or just someone who is interested in how a college professor becomes fascinated by independent and alternative music, this podcast has something for everyone.  If you believe that a day without music like a day without air… Oh, yeah we may have overstated that a little bit but seriously if you believe that some of greatest musical discoveries are in your future and not in your past then this podcast is for you!  And you should check into their other podcasts while you are there!  They have some interviews and conversations with some of our favorite Dayton musicians, music enthusiasts, and others involved in the area music scene.

Thank you Izzy and the folks at The Gem City Podcast for taking the time to talk about music with us!  You are terrific!

The I Don’t Cares

As many of you already know, Paul Westerberg is back with a new project with Juliana Hatfield of The Blake Babies called The I Don’t Cares. The album, Wild Stab, is a classic slice of Westerberg with a strong sense of melody as strengthened by Juliana Hatfield.  She always had a way with a melody.  And while Westerberg is one of the finest indie musicians, period.  His solo work has ranged all over the map.  So, it is nice to see him return to that Stonesy influenced post punk/indie that we all so deeply love.  And a great example of that is the reworking of a past Westerberg solo tune… Born for Me.

Yeah, life is good.  New music from Paul Westerberg and Juliana Hatfield, a new Bob Mould record on the way; it’s an ok day.  What new music are you excited about?  Let us know at drjwudr over there on Twitter and Gmail.
