Babbling April’s “Farewell Dayton” Party

We learned a few weeks ago that Dave and Vivienne of Babbling April will be leaving the Gem City for new jobs in Washington DC at the end of March. And while we informed them that this has to be some kind of mistake.  They assure us that they have to take this opportunity.  So, Dayton got together last night it was time for one last hurrah for Babbling April as-we-know-them, featuring some of Dayton’s finest bands.

We saw It’s People, of course Babbling April played a terrific set, the always energetic Speaking Suns and the fantastic Manray!

The farewell party was held in the Fire Blocks District of downtown Dayton where we all hope to develop a DIY space for bands to play as well as other cultural events in the city –spoken word performance, alternative lectures, rallies and more. There was no cover charge, but donations were accepted to raise money for the bands that so graciously gave up their time to play for all of us!

Babbling April will return. But until then here is a clip of Babbling April doing a Pixies cover!  So fun!

Life on The Limb

Life on the Limb coverOne of our favorite bands is sharing new music with us!  The Boxcar Suite will release their latest Life on the Limb EP in a mere matter of days… April 1!  The EP follows 2014’s excellent Across the Vast & Deep in preparation for the group’s next full length record. The new EP features four new tracks produced by Tim Pritchard at Suite Basement Studio.

The band will celebrate the EP release with a show at The Trolley Stop on Saturday, April 1st with special guests Columbus, Oh based The Nick Frye Band.  You need to make plans now!

“This release features material that we wrote while we were working on Across the Vast & Deep” says Pritchard. “We had a lot of material going in to that project and while we chose the recordings that best fit that album, there were some songs that we felt were just as strong but needed to be recut. After the release of that album we hit the studio to start recording the next full length and re-tracked some of this material as well. The cuts we liked the best make up this EP. They’re not just extra material, but some of our favorite tracks we’ve come up with.”

The Boxcar Suite spent 2015-2016 playing shows around the Midwest and recording material for another full length to be completed this year.  And we could not be happier about this at YTAA!  Expect to hear the new songs this coming Tuesday on the show and soon we will have a special surprise to share with all of you.

New Show, featuring The Turnback

Turnback bandYou know the drill.  Its Tuesday.  Time for another Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative on WUDR from 3-6pm!

Today on YTAA we are featuring the indie power pop of The Turnback!  Their new record, Are We There Yet? has the perfect combination of solid rock melody, deft harmonies, and well written lyrics backed up with a solid guitar, bass, and drums attack!  Goldmine has a terrific review that we could not agree with more!

All too often music curmudgeons lament the end of rock and roll – there is nothing to get excited about anymore.  Do these folks have ears? With bands like, The Turnback, we say that rock and roll is alive and well. We love the sound of ‘Five Days a Week’,’July’, and ‘A Place for Me’.  And the addition of The Beatles cover ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ that moves past the psychedelia of the original and pulls out the core of that song with a Smithereens-garage rock sound that was deeply hidden in that classic track – we say that rock and roll is not just safe but full of energy!

Join us this Tuesday as we talk with members of The Turnback about their latest and most impressive album to date!

We do not hide from our love of classic alternative on Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative.

And today Mrs. Dr. J found what can only be described as a classic set!  Recorded by Benjamin R. Clark!  What a discovery!

Last night we saw Frontier Folk Nebraska

1One of the amazing benefits of living in The Gem City – Dayton, Ohio is the opportunity to see so many terrific bands that simply blow you away and demonstrate the power of music!  One of those moments happened last week with Pure Acoustic at The Old Yellow Cab/Tavern!

This weekend we saw Salvadore Ross, Frontier Folk Nebraska and Human Cannonball at Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District of Dayton, Ohio.  And while all bands were fantastic, Frontier Folk Nebraska — from just down the road in Covington, KY — were powerful.  It was a great night of great songs, amazing guitar players, bouncing bass lines and some fine drumming from all three bands!   Remember in the words of Mrs. Dr. J:  “support your local music scene!” — its a lifestyle and a mantra of great music!

5We have seen FFN several times in the past but last night the band demonstrated the reason that they are so damn good: great singing, tight and expressive harmonies, solid drumming, a bass line that just did not quit and, of course, fantastic guitar work!  We look forward to the band’s upcoming live record that was recorded at the Southgate house in Cincinnati and will be available within days!  You need this record.  You should go pre-order the record right now!  We did.  You will love this band and their fantastic songs!  Do not miss a chance to see them when they are out!  Trust us this band delivers the goods!

ManrayThis week we are joined by one of the exciting new bands in the Miami Valley!  Manray will be joining us in the studio to discuss their latest record — a terrific EP called ‘Feeling Alright’ and their upcoming shows in Dayton, Cincinnati and further a field!  We could not be more excited to have them on the show.  The band has agreed to chat and play live in the WUDR performance studio.  Check out their upcoming show with The Zygotes and SKRT at The Old Yellow Cab Building!
