Annual Indie Holiday on Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative
It is that time yet again… in fact, this marks our Fifth Indie Holiday program on Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative! Join us as we welcome Tom Gilliam of Ghost Town Silence and Vivienne Machi and Dave New of Babbling April in the studio as we listen to indie holiday music. Chances are you may hear some live holiday music from our guests!
We are joined by family and friends as we play several indie bands and musicians who wish to celebrate the holidays. As always we are also expecting some very exciting live performances of some indie and classic holiday songs.
So grab some coco and free up some time from the wrapping of presents and come along with our audio sleigh ride of independent holiday music from 3-6pm on Tuesday December 15th on wudr.udayton.edu!
Excited for a show filled with new music!
Such an amazing time for new music in the Gem City that we can barely contain ourselves – it all feels like an incredible dream!
We simply could not be more excited about the show tomorrow… premiers from so many great bands that we keep pinching ourselves because we just have to be dreaming, right?
We will be playing a great new songs from Dayton’s own Moira – ‘Midwestern Waste’ off of the Asleep/Repeat/Awake EP which you can download tomorrow night after our show because they are giving it away as a free download on their Bandcamp page moirabandofficial.bandcamp.com! If you have not seen one of their recent concert – trust us, you want this song and you want it badly! Oh yeah.
One of our favorite Dayon bands Me & Mountains have new stuff for all of us. ‘Gold’ is from their yet untitled upcoming fourth record recorded with Micah Carli at Popside Recording Studios. The band is several songs into their recording with Carli and based on this track alone – the future looks good for Me & Mountains and your ears!
We are also fortunate to have a track from Good Luck Year‘s Tinder for the Fire EP with ‘Temporary’ which they will release during their set at Dayton’s Music Art and Film Fest!
And not to mention the guys in The New Old-Fashioned have their sophomore record, Low Down Dirty Summer Nights headed our way on September 26th! You can go see these Midwestern barn burners at Gilly’s in Dayton, Ohio on the 26th and pick up a copy of this fine record! The band has captured the intensity of their live sound without sacrificing the harmonies and soul that make them a band not to be missed!
That is enough reason to listen right there music lovers! Solid music craft is alive and well!
We will also discuss the upcoming Dayton Music Art and Film Festival slated for September 18th and 19th as well as playing new music from many diverse and exciting bands such as The Bottle Rockets, Line & Circle, COLD BEAT, Sink Tapes, Wilco, La Luz, The Wheel Workers, Bad Bad Hats, Sea Of Bees,Grenades!?, McGuff and the Dumpster Fires, The Apache Relay, and The Fratellis to name a few of the bands with new tunes that we will spin for your listening pleasure!
Of course, what is a Tuesday without some cool interpretations of past music? We have an amazing cover from Robyn Hitchcock and a surprisingly atmospheric lo-fi 80s cover from Tashaki Miyaki! Where else would you get all of this indie musical goodness?

Let’s Talk Dayton Music Cards
Hey there! This week we are joined by Joe Eversole who for some time now has been creating amazing trading cards that feature several Dayton musicians. These cards read like classic sports trading cards except the ‘stats’ are cool facts about some of your favorite musicians. What would possess someone to do something like this on their own — read kindness of heart kinds of activity! Well, we will find out tomorrow when we interview Joe during the last hour of the program.
During the first two hours you can expect some new music from Wilco, Jason Isbell, Bad Bad Hats, Max B. Greene, Danielle Taylor, Firewood Island, Good Luck Year, Bang Gang, Kopecky, My Morning Jacket, Speedy Ortiz, Bodeans, The Kyle Sowashes, R. Ring and much more!

This week we celebrate the New Split EP from The New Old-Fashioned and The Repeating Arms
This week we are beyond excited about new music from two of our favorite Dayton, Ohio bands – The New Old-Fashioned who are already finishing up their sophomore full length hot off the heels of The Ladies 7″ record and The Repeating Arms who always are incredible in all that they do!
The two bands are not only “splitting” a six-song EP ‘Hilltops and Highways’ but in the truest sense of collaboration these two bands recorded and worked directly with each other on the songs. No where does this shine more brightly than on the tracks that open and close this EP. County Jail Hymnal showcases the vocal abilities of the singers of both bands. This lonesome (dare we say Hank Williams-eque) plaintive aching song demonstrates what is captivating about both of these bands: quality song-craft! And the combination of both bands on ‘Some Nights” is a powerful gestalt of the vocals, guitars, steel, drums, and more. Rarely has a song taken on such real authentic urgency. And the ending of that tune has to be experienced. Heartbreak and sadness are simply palatable in the songs on this EP; throughout it you have fine musicianship, excellent chemistry and all around exemplary effort among the musicians.
The fact that they have collaborated on-stage so much is well demonstrated in the work on these songs. ‘My Heart Still Loves You’ has Kent Montgomery of The New Old-Fashioned sounding like a countrified version of Matthew Sweet. We bet that Sweet wishes he could sound like that! While ‘Radio Waves’ – a real song about the devastating loss of a radio station to water damaged is powerfully evoked by David Payne. When he sings about ‘the signal getting weaker…” you feel the sense of losing a musical friend. And ‘Honey’ demonstrates why The Repeating Arms should be household names. Forget what you hear on country, folk, and alt-country radio – this is “the Real McCoy.” When Harold Hensley pleads with Honey not to go out tonight…” the hair on the back of your neck stand up. These musicians capture something that cannot be bottled and sold from a shelf.

Karl Benge Memorial Show
This week we have a heavy heart on Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative
It is so often said that music makes all of us connected to one another. It makes us family. Days ago we unexpectedly lost a member of the Dayton, Ohio music family. Our good friend Karl Benge left us for another new adventure far too soon. And while we grieve for this loss, we come together to remember Karl and his contributions as a musician and a sound engineer.
In an effort to assist his family, members of the Dayton music community have organized a fantastic fundrais…ing benefit show to help with the funeral expenses. The concert fundraiser will be held at the Oregon Express on May 16 from 9pm to 1:30am. The cost for this event is a $3 donation (although you can certainly contribute more if you wish). Do not miss this event! Information about where you can make a donation if you cannot attend will be shared soon.
All performers are donating their time to help raise money for Karl’s family. The lineup so far includes Tim Berger, Sharon A. Lane, Charles Hartman of OldNews, Brian Hoeflich, David Payne of The New Old-Fashioned, Paige Beller, Dip Spit, Todd T. Fox, a not to be missed reunited Orange Willard, and most appropriately the show will close with The White Soots performing without Karl.
The show this week will include music and memories of Karl Benge and in order to do justice to his memory – Tim Berger, Kyle Byrum, and Gretchen Reise Kelly will join us in studio discussing their friend Karl with all of us.

The case has now been resolved, and the jury found in the Gayes’ favour, despite the copying not being exact and the musical elements dissimilar, as my original February 2014 post (below) argues. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Richard Busch, the Gaye family lawyer, describes how the Thicke side’s hubris and inconsistency contributed to the jury verdict going against them – but insists that the case was successful because of the characteristics of the music itself. For those who have said that this sets a dangerous precedent for creators (including me – see this MTV news interview), this may be so in terms of discouraging musical homage in arrangements. But in (US) legal terms, a jury ruling is different from a court ruling, so each case is judged on its merits and on the specific evidence presented. You’re Never Coming Back: YTAA Celebrates New Music from Dear Fawn
Dear Fawn have new music and we are showcasing a few songs from their new record! You’re Never Coming Back is their terrific followup to I Never Played The Queen. We will chat with them during the show and play some of their new music as well as a few older favorites.
